Responsibilities

The Health and Safety (H&S) Manager/Specialist is responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with H&S regulations and promoting a safe working environment throughout the business. This role involves collaborating with project teams, contractors, and stakeholders to identify and mitigate potential health and safety risks, develop effective safety plans, ensure all relevant and compliant policies and data is up to date, and monitor adherence to relevant regulations and best practices. The H&S Manager/Specialist will play a critical role in promoting a culture of safety and ensuring that all North's activities are carried out in accordance with H&S requirements.

 

As Health and Safety Manager/Specialist you will be responsible for:

  • Compliance Management:

    • Interpret and enforce all relevant health and safety legislation.
    • Develop and implement robust H&S policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with legal requirements and industry best practices.
    • Monitor and evaluate compliance with H&S standards, providing guidance and support to ensure adherence.
    • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure corrective actions are taken.

    Project Coordination:

    • Collaborate with project teams to identify and assess H&S risks.
    • Advise on H&S considerations and ensure they are integrated into project plans, drawings, and specifications.
    • Review and approve contractors' H&S documentation, such as method statements and risk assessments.
    • Participate in project meetings to provide H&S expertise and guidance to stakeholders.

    Risk Assessment and Management:

    • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop appropriate control measures.
    • Collaborate with project teams to develop and implement effective risk management strategies.
    • Regularly review risk assessments and update them as necessary based on changing project conditions or scope.

    Training and Education:

    • Provide H&S training to project teams, contractors, and relevant stakeholders.
    • Promote awareness of H&S policies and procedures, fostering a culture of safety across the project.
    • Stay informed about new developments in H&S regulations and best practices and share relevant information with the project team.

    Incident and Accident Management:

    • Investigate and report incidents, accidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and recommending preventive measures.
    • Ensure that appropriate reporting procedures are followed, and relevant authorities are notified as required.
    • Monitor incident trends, analyse data, and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

Qualifications

For development purposes the following knowledge, skills and experience are required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience as a Health and Safety Manager/Specialist 
  • In-depth knowledge of H&S legislation, and industry best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to risk management.
  • Professional certifications such as NEBOSH Construction Certificate, CMIOSH, or equivalent are preferred.
  • Experience with conducting audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, and managing H&S documentation.
  • Experience leading a H&S team
  • Proficient in using H&S management software and other relevant tools.
